From this letter by George W. Johnson Jr he explains to whom he's writing that they have traveled from Appomattox Court House to Burnsville. He includes Lee's surrender and why it has taken him so long to respond. From this letter learned that there was a lot of moving around and traveling. It was also hard to satay in contact with friends or family and there is a lot of time being passed before they will see each other. Also Johnson doesn't go in full description on whats happening on his part.
"Our Banner In the Sky" was painted by Frederic Edwin Church in 1861. It symbolizes the strength of the Union when attacked at Fort Sumter by the Confederates. I chose this piece of artwork because as Church said "Its an American Flag in the heavens, as if the Union was guided by a higher purpose." I think this artwork also displays encouragement and unison as to when you look up in the sky you shall know that we will stay united as a nation throughout the civil war.
